What is 72-hour notice overtime and when is it paid?

Employees receive premium overtime at 1.5× their regular hourly rate when:

  • They receive less than 72 hours’ notice to work before starting approved annual or compensatory leave; or
  • They receive less than 72 hours’ notice to work on a holiday; or
  • They are called back to work while on approved annual or compensatory leave, even if more than 72 hours’ notice was given.

Under this policy, employees are first paid their regular hourly rate, and the additional 0.5× amount is paid as a supplemental payment. This additional amount equals the difference between the regular overtime rate and the premium overtime rate, including longevity.

To be eligible, employees must have been approved for a full day of annual and/or compensatory leave or scheduled to be off the entire day on a holiday.

Employees called back on a holiday may receive additional compensation for all hours worked on the holiday.

Employees cannot receive additional compensation if those hours are already paid at the premium rate (1.5×), whether paid as cash or compensatory time.

Not eligible under this policy:

  • Executive-level employees (exempt employees who receive no overtime)
  • Part-time employees scheduled to work less than 1,600 hours in a fiscal year
