An appointing authority or other authorized official may ask an employee to provide medical documentation—such as a doctor’s note, personal affidavit, or other proof—to support the reason for a sick leave absence.
If an employee has been unable to perform their job due to illness or disability, the agency may also require medical certification from a licensed health care provider before the employee can return to work.
Sick leave cannot be denied if a healthcare provider confirms the employee’s condition requires time off. However, if the provider’s statement does not include clear start and end dates, the employee may be asked to provide additional documentation.
Supervisors or agency officials should ask the employee—not the health care provider—if more information is needed. Additional documentation may also be required if there is evidence of sick leave abuse.
