How much bereavement leave can an employee take?

Employees may take paid bereavement leave without using their own leave balances for the death of certain family members:

  • 3 days – sibling, grandparent, grandchild, foster parent, or parent-in-law
  • 5 days – parent or stepparent
  • 10 days – spouse, child (including unborn), or stepchild

Bereavement leave must be used within 12 months of the date of death.
Employees must be in a leave-accruing position to qualify.
