When can employees use sick leave?

Eligible employees may use sick leave for:

  • Personal illness or disability from an accident
  • Exposure to a contagious disease
  • Pregnancy or childbirth (see Chapter 13, Parental Leave)
  • Adoption (bonding period)
  • Medical or dental appointments
  • Illness, medical care, or death of a family member

Family members include:

  • Spouse
  • Children (biological, unborn, adopted, foster, step, or legal ward)
  • Parents
  • Others with a close relationship, if approved by the appointing authority
