How does bereavement leave work?

Bereavement leave is paid and does not reduce other leave balances:

  • 3 days: sibling, grandparent, grandchild, foster parent, parent-in-law
  • 5 days: parent or stepparent
  • 10 days: spouse, child (including unborn), or stepchild

Example: With 90.5 hours sick leave, the employee uses 3 days bereavement (22.5 hours); sick leave stays 90.5. If they also use 2 days sick (15.0), sick leave becomes 75.5.

Recordkeeping: BER (Bereavement Leave).
