What is the probationary period for Preferred Service employees?

The probationary period for Preferred Service employees in Tennessee State Government is defined as follows:

  • Duration: 12 to 24 months.
  • Start Date: Begins on the employee’s first day of employment or the effective date of their promotion to a new role.
  • Purpose: Must be completed to become a Preferred Service employee.

 

Important Notes:

  • During the probationary period, an employee may be terminated for any reason, subject to applicable laws, rules, and policies.
  • Employees serving their initial probationary period (first 12 months of State employment) are not eligible for appeal rights if terminated.
  • Employees on subsequent probation (due to promotion into a new role) retain appeal rights.
