Veterans' Preference only applies to Preferred Service jobs. If you are currently serving on active duty and have not yet been discharged, you must submit a statement or memorandum from your commanding officer verifying your anticipated honorable discharge.
The statement must include:
- Character of service.
- Dates of service.
- Expected discharge date.
- Commanding officer's signature and date.
The statement must be dated within 90 days of your expected discharge date.
Important: You must attach the commanding officer's statement to your application to qualify for Veterans' Preference. You must also provide an official DD Form 214 within 90 days after discharge to maintain your eligibility.
