How do spouses or surviving spouses qualify for Veterans’ Preference?

Veterans’ Preference may be available to certain spouses and surviving spouses of veterans.

A spouse may qualify if the veteran has a 100% service-connected disability or is permanently and totally disabled.

A surviving spouse may qualify if the veteran died in the line of duty and the surviving spouse has not remarried.

Spouses and surviving spouses must also meet applicable residency and documentation requirements.
