Some agencies can’t close for holidays due to operational needs. When possible, employees should return to a normal workweek.
- Employees scheduled to work on a holiday receive compensatory overtime hour-for-hour for time worked, up to their scheduled hours.
- If a non-exempt employee works more than their regular schedule, they may receive cash overtime for the extra hours.
- If an employee’s office is closed for a holiday but they were scheduled to work, they receive holiday time hour-for-hour for that scheduled time.
- If a holiday falls on a regular day off, employees receive 7.5 or 8 hours of compensatory time, depending on their schedule.
- Employees approved for compensatory or annual leave on a holiday have that day charged as holiday time (no overtime or extra comp time).
- If sick leave is approved instead—with a doctor’s note—sick leave is charged and compensatory time is granted.
- Employees who work part of a holiday shift have the rest charged as holiday time and receive comp time for hours worked.
- Unexcused absences are charged as leave without pay with no holiday comp time.
- Employees on a 37.5-hour week must receive at least 7.5 hours of pay or comp time for the holiday.
- Employees on a 40-hour week must receive at least 8 hours when eligible.
