What notice must employees give before taking FMLA leave?

If the need for FMLA leave is foreseeable, employees must give at least 30 days’ advance notice before the leave begins.
If 30 days’ notice isn’t possible—such as a medical emergency or unexpected change—employees must notify their agency as soon as practicable, usually within one or two business days of knowing the start date.
