How long do employees have to use FMLA leave for birth, adoption, or foster care?

FMLA leave for the birth of a child or for the placement of a child through adoption or foster care must be used within 12 months of the date of birth or placement.
Any unused FMLA leave for these reasons expires at the end of that 12-month period.
