What is a “serious health condition” under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)?

A serious health condition is an illness, injury, impairment, or physical or mental condition that involves either inpatient care or continuing treatment by a health care provider.
•    Inpatient care means an overnight stay in a hospital, hospice, or residential medical care facility.
•    Continuing treatment includes ongoing care or supervision for a condition lasting more than three days, pregnancy and prenatal care, chronic or long-term illnesses, or multiple treatments such as surgery or therapy.
