When can an employee use civil leave for jury duty?

Civil leave may be used when a state employee is subpoenaed or directed to serve as a juror in any U.S. or Tennessee court.

  • All employees, including part-time, scheduled to work that day, are eligible for civil leave.
  • Employees not scheduled to work that day aren’t eligible.
  • After receiving a jury summons, employees must show it to their supervisor on their next workday.
  • Civil leave is granted for any day an employee is required to report for jury duty if service exceeds three (3) hours that day.
    • If jury duty lasts less than three hours, that time is coded as civil leave, and the employee must return to work or use compensatory or annual leave for the remaining hours.
  • Civil leave also covers travel time to and from jury duty.
