How are service groups and anniversary dates set and adjusted?

  • Service group uses all creditable state service (across agencies/colleges/universities). Former members of the Tennessee General Assembly (eligible as of 7/1/1988) get 12 months of full-time service per year served for leave computation.
  • When appointment types change or returning from extended leave, agencies must verify the service anniversary and longevity dates with DOHR.
  • Creditable service excludes months where the employee didn’t work a major portion, unless on military, paid educational, or Division of Claims leave. Certain Department of Education roles may count up to 3 years of prior TN public school experience toward the service group.
  • The service anniversary date is when the employee is projected to change leave groups. It’s based on the first of the month in which the first annual leave was earned (or a computed continuous date). It changes only for a break in service or special LWOP beyond the major portion of a month.
  • Reinstating prior service can change the service group; employees must notify supervisors. Leave adjustments caused by retroactive changes are calculated back to the last hire date
